NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR:

the bAKEHOUSE Residency program

At KXT on Broadway approximately 50% of each year’s programming is dedicated to New Australian plays. In our early days in KX Hotel, we supported development of new work through the Storytellers seasons; by offering space free of charge to playwrights whenever there was a break in programming; as part of our Step Up Opportunity program; and in partnership with resident companies such as JackRabbit, Purple Tape, and Panimo. In 2023 the move to our newly built theatre on Broadway provided a home for new writing downstairs in the KXT Vault.

Over recent years we have supported a cohort of writers through the Laboratory, led by Saro Lusty-Cavallari, designed to equip early career playwrights with skills and support for fast tracking their passion projects, with a number landing on the KXT on Broadway stage, as well as Belvoir, Griffin and ATYP. In 2024 & 2025 we presented a showcase season of work developed in the KXT Vault as part of the formalised bAKEHOUSE Residency program. In 2026 we invested further into the development, support and showcasing of new writing through: our partnership with NIDA through the MFA(writing) course is designed to provide valuable experience to recent graduates; and our newly launched KXT Underground program, the home for uncurated work, much of it debut seasons of new writing.

We are now taking appplications for the bAKEHOUSE Residency Program in the KXT Vault

WHAT: we’re opening the door to artists with a new play they’d like to develop. It can be a final draft, an early draft, or an idea. You will receive allocated time in the KXT Vault that you may use to explore your work with other creatives, or to work on your own.

The KXT Vault has chairs, fold down tables, fixed bench seating. The footprint of the Vault closely matches the size of the stage in KXT on Broadway.

WHEN: the KXT Vault will be made available for up to 3 days for each development. Hours of access are arranged to minimise impact on the company working on the KXT stage during your Residency. Daytime hours will be scheduled between 10am - 6pm, and here are generous weekend hours available. Sunday and Monday evenings may also be offered subject to availability

NOTE: you will be required to attend the venue prior to your first Residency for a brief induction with a member of the KXT Artist Support Team.

OUTCOMES: you will be asked to provide a brief emailed summary of your time in the KXT Vault. It may be that a member of the KXT team will drop into the Vault at a time arranged to observe your work.

SHOWCASES: the bAKEHOUSE Residency program is not suitable for showcases. This is because there is a limit to the number of people who may use the space, and KXT is unable to provide personnel to support showcases. Each year Residents are invited to participate in a Residency showcase on the KXT stage, as part of the KXT Summer Season. This has previously been held in January of the following year; however this may change as we begin to program KXT2027
